Work on the railway bridge on Priory Road south in St Denys between September 11 and December 24 is expected to involve a road closure for drivers.

Strengthening and maintenance of the railway “underbridge” needs to take place, according to Network Rail, who are holding a face-to-face for residents to quiz project managers at the bridge itself on Thursday (Sept 3) from 6-8pm.

Local road signage, and one.network, suggest the section of road around the bridge will be closed for the duration. There will be a signed diversion via Adelaide Road.

Scaffolding and protective encapsulation around the bridge will be required, and the work will include pressure jet washing, grit blasting, concrete breaking, steelwork repairs and new paintwork.

A letter to nearby residents states: “To provide a safe working environment for both the workforce and the public, a full road closure will be implemented for the duration of the works on the section of Priory Road beneath and adjacent to the railway bridge between 22:00 on 11/09/26 and 05:00 on 24/12/26.”

The letter says the western footpath will remain open for pedestrians, and that there will be some 24-hour shift working over the period.

As reported, Priory Road has seen a series of daytime closures over the summer for resurfacing work. The Adelaide Road exit onto St Denys Road has also been closed recently – likely until September 4 according to one.network - for work by Southern Water, said to be to fix a leak.
