Knowledge 2 Round 2

The second of three Knowledge 2 (K2) urban youth festivals is set to take place in Southampton on Saturday July 1 in Hoglands Park (opposite Debenhams), with plenty of opportunities for young people to take part and showcase their talent.

More than 2,500 young people converged on Hoglands Park earlier this month to enjoy a range of music, arts and sports activities, alongside local young peoples’ services, focusing on health and wellbeing issues.

Expect music from local up-and-coming bands Agent Orange, Freeze Frame, The Crease and Kids Can’t Fly. Alongside the bands will be break-dancing crews, DJ and drum workshops. Also on offer will be t-shirt design, circus skills, sculpture and spray art workshops (look out for K2 spray art pieces brightening up disused shops and building sites around the city).

Young people who performed at last year’s events were offered the chance to record their material in professional sound studios around the city, leading to the production of a K2 music CD.

Sports activities will include BMX demonstrations and workshops, climbing walls, static triathlon and a special surprise to help celebrate the world cup.

As if all that wasn’t enough there will be free food, giveaways and prizes, and a wealth of information, advice and support on lots of stuff affecting young people.

The festivals are co-coordinated through Southampton City Council’s City Youth Service and Southampton Voluntary Service’s Safe in Sound Project, which have brought together a working partnership of forty local agencies to provide activities on the day. Funding has come from the council’s Central Neighbourhoods Partnership, Southampton City Primary Care Trust, Hampshire Crime Prevention Panel, Connexions, It’s your Choice and the City Youth Service.

K2 takes place from 12pm to 6pm. The last K2 of the summer takes place on August 5.
