On
Saturday July 15 Southampton City Council will be playing host to
the Living Streets annual conference. Living Streets is a national charity campaigning for better streets
and public space for people on foot. The event is a chance
for community activists to get together with local and national
politicians and professionals to find answers and solutions.
Councillor Adrian Vinson, Councillor Jill Baston and Councillor
John Slade, and local MPs will all be present along with council
officers from highways, city design, cleaning/open
spaces, housing, neighbourhood wardens and neighbourhood coordinators.
Living Streets formed 76 years ago as the
Pedestrians’ Association; the organisation has always campaigned for
road safety and pedestrians’ rights, but also for streets which are fit
for community life — for chatting, strolling, playing, shopping and all
the other time-honoured uses of public space.
