The council is currently offering discounted composters and food digesters – and says it's introducing a glass collection service later this year.

The offer will apparently save residents up to £68 on the usual price of a food digester and over £6 on the recommended retail price of a composter. There is however a limited supply, and are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
"We are committed to reducing our city's carbon footprint and the amount of waste that goes to landfill," said Jon Dyer-Slade, head of city services for Southampton City Council. "Home composting is a very green way to deal with your garden and kitchen waste.
"Every food digester takes around 130kg of waste out of the household bin each year. Multiply that by the 300 food digesters and that's several lorry loads of waste every year."
The council introduced a £35 annual charge for residents opting in to their garden waste removal service in April.
