It may not quite be Bestival, but if you fancy a little musical entertainment over the weekend there's plenty going on. From Secret Affair and T.Rextasy (left), to reggae, acoustic Irish and a Battle of the Bands final, here’s just a small selection on our doorsteps.
Friday, September 6
Secret Affair, best known for their anthem ‘Time for Action’, play The Brook on Friday (Sept 6).
At the Hobbit on Friday it’s Troublegum with DJ Klive & friends, and their “rock/metal/punk/dance/dubstep/ cheesy mash up alternative party hoedown till you fall down”. More details here.
At The Art House on Friday there’s a fundraiser with “arguably the best acoustic guitarist in the country”, Clive Carroll.
Meanwhile at Talking Heads on Southampton Oxjam showcases four bands while raising cash to fight poverty, including an acoustic set from Missing Citizen; Winters Hill – a three-piece acoustic band; Charming – an alternative folk rock band from the Isle of Wight; and Black Lodge Band – a “Hampshire rock quartet who like to blend disco beats with gothic howls and theatrical melodies”. Entry is £5 on the door with all money going to Oxjam.
Saturday, September 7
Enjoy the spirit of a T.Rex concert with glam rock tribute band T.Rextasy at The Brook, while the only free weekly reggae session in Southampton gets underway at Talking heads on Saturday afternoon “offering a wide selection of reggae from heavy dub, to roots, ska, rocksteady and even some modern releases, all played on vinyl, through the Headsessions Soundsystem Party Rig,”
In the evening Jurassic Mark Presents his Battle of the Bands final with Blindmans Vision, Eagle & Weeks, 21 Days, Owers, Sights, and The Bayonettes.
Sunday, September 8

Up the road prog rock out as G2 Definitive Genesis pay tribute to Genesis at The Brook, or chill out with The Southampton Modern Jazz Club's free Sunday Session at The Bent Brief on Lodge Road, and The SoundCellar Quintet from 9pm .
