Updated A walk for peace takes place on Saturday, September 21 - the UN's International Day of Peace – meeting at noon at Queens Peace Fountain, Andrews (East) Park. It will coincide with activities and celebrations across the world.
Organisers say the event has been created with the belief that people want peace, and it's a chance to publicly share with others their wish to see peace.
Participants will be invited to join in a couple of peace songs, led by local Community Choir Leader, Maggie O’Connor, and then walk hand-in-hand down through Andrews (East) Park, Palmerston Park & Houndwell Park and then back again to the Peace Fountain.
"The march occurs concurrently with the observation of the International Day of Peace, a day that the United Nations calls on all combatants around the world to lay down their arms and to give peace a real chance; a day to reflect and consider how best to break the vicious cycle of violence that conflict creates," says event publicity.
"This movement has emerged out of a sense of responsibility we all share to leave a better world for our children. We aim to inspire all of humanity to unite for this day to clearly and publicly demonstrate that the world can and must respect each other’s differences and stand together united in peace, for humanity, our earth and the future."
Update: and from 7.30 pm there will be a candle-lit Peace Vigil at the Peace Fountain, attended by the Mayor, with songs led by the Conchord Singers. This is organised by the local branch of the United Nations Association.
