Southampton martial arts expert Alan Gibson, who teaches Wing Chun at St. Denys Community Centre, is celebrating the publication of his new book, Beginning Wing Chun. Publishing rights have also been sold into the USA, Russia and Germany.
Alan will be signing the first copies of his new book on Saturday October 28 at 11am in Peter Rhodes Bookstore, at 21 Portswood Rd, Southampton.
Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art and was made famous largely as the fighting system studied by Bruce Lee. Traditionally it is a very simple, direct and efficient system of Hong Kong kung fu which was designed to be effective rather than flamboyant, unlike the more common Chinese Wu Shu styles. A victim who is skilled in Wing Chun can overcome an attack from a stronger assailant, making it ideal for women's self defence, as well as for any age and fitness level. It is a very fast learning method of self defence.

This completely revised edition of Alan's original book reflects the evolution of training methods, both of the author and of the martial arts world in general. It is clearly illustrated with photography and diagrams, but in addition it now contains a complete set of training drills, with key footwork and concept linking methods. Fighting practice, reality drills, and strength and conditioning are also included in this comprehensive manual. Enabling readers to learn how Wing Chun works, why it is so effective in practice and why its methods differ so radically from other martial arts.
Alan said of his art: "My objective is to teach functional kung fu in a relaxed and accessible manner, with an emphasis on skill and personal development, rather than aggression and violence. Effective Wing Chun can be simply learned by commitment and patience. With the added benefit of intelligence and regular practice, a high level of proficiency can be obtained quickly and with ease."
Since his first forays into the publishing world Alan has produced two other very popular books on Wing Chun and a range of professionally produced instructional DVDs. The Wing Chun Federation web site http://www.wingchun.org.uk is a frequently visited learning resource centre for martial artists and has links to Wing Chun communities world wide. He is currently working with a colleague on Mind and Body Metamorphosis, a fitness, health and mental focus manual based on martial arts movement and training.
Alan teaches Wing Chun at St. Denys Community Centre on Tuesday and Thursday nights 8.00 9.30pm and on the Isle of Wight on Mondays, and he is always looking out for new students, men and women of any age, to learn Wing Chun kung fu.
