You don't need to attend an auditions or read music – all you need is a love of singing to join a new community choir which will rehearse for just eight weeks and then perform at a concert hall to raise vital funds for charity WaterAid.
Southampton-based composer, singer and musical director Fiona Funnell’s (pictured conducting, below) latest pop-up choir begins rehearsals on May 12 at St Mark’s Church Hall. It will culminate in a performance at a ‘Sing for Water’ concert which takes place on Saturday, July 5 at 7.30pm at Turner Sims Concert Hall on the University of Southampton campus.
Growing self-confidence
“Forming a pop-up choir is such fun. I particularly enjoy welcoming people who have not sung for years, and watching their frowns of concentration gradually turn to radiating pleasure and growing self-confidence,” said Fiona.
Songs will include ‘The Cup Song’ and ‘Bring a Little Water, Sylvie’ using body percussion, and ‘A Summer’s Evening in July’ from Fiona’s album, ‘Fabulous Turquoise Coat’. Other performers will include a performance poet, Still Moving DJ’s and community choirs from the New Forest and Wiltshire.
Access to safe water for poorest
Charity WaterAid enables the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. Its vision is of a world where everyone has access to these basic human rights which underpin health, education and livelihoods forming the first, essential step in overcoming poverty.
