Portswood’s independent bookstore October Books is supporting a ‘tour of utopian Southampton’ on Friday (Sept 5) led by Southampton-born Owen Hatherley, author of 'Militiant Modernism', 'A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain’ and 'A New Kind of Bleak'. Hatherley has written for a wide range of publications primarily on architecture, politics and culture.
His ‘A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain’ “sets out to explore the wreckage-the buildings that epitomized an age of greed and aspiration. From Greenwich to Glasgow, Milton Keynes to Manchester, Hatherley maps the derelict Britain of the 2010s: from riverside apartment complexes, art galleries and amorphous interactive centers, to shopping malls, call centers and factories turned into expensive lofts…”
The tour starts at 6pm at the old Southampton Terminus railway station, meeting outside what’s now the Genting Club, SO14 3FE.
