“Is an extra hour of daylight in the evenings a good thing?” asks MP

ImageJohn Denham, the Labour MP for Southampton Itchen, is asking his constituents what they think of the proposal to add one hour to GMT in the winter and one hour to British Summer Time in the summer.

The change is proposed by Conservative MP Tim Yeo who has drawn second place in the Private Members Bill ballot and is introducing a Bill to move the clocks forward by one hour throughout the year.
This means that in the summer the time would be British Summer Time + 1 hour and in the winter it would be Greenwich Mean Time + 1 hour.

John Denham said “Here in Southampton, this would make for darker mornings but the evenings would stay light for longer.  There is some evidence that lighter evenings in the winter would reduce the accident rate for pedestrians, especially children, but do we want it to be dark in the mornings when we’re travelling to work or school?

“I’d like people to write and tell me what they think or go to my website where I’ve set up a survey.
