Royston Smith, the new Conservative MP for Southampton Itchen, made his maiden speech in parliment on July 13.

He paid tribute to his predecessor, John Denham, "with genuine respect for a man who has served Southampton with distinction", and said he saw it as his job to ensure Southampton gets "our fair share of support and a more equitable local government settlement."
