Residents are attempting to preserve the character of the area in Whitworth Crescent, and prevent buildings being demolished and replaced with modern blocks of flats, by having a conservation area declared.
City Council conservation officer Jane Davies is now due to meet residents on March 8 at 2.30pm outside no 74 Whitworth Crescent. The building, which has already been converted into flats, is currently empty and boarded up. Neighbours describe it as “a beautiful circa 1900 corner property with original features, including an unusual Mansard roof, dormer windows, terraced garden, tongue and groove porch and sash windows”. They fear that further attempts will be made to gain permission to demolish the building and replace it with modern flats. Any demolition is unwanted and unnecessary, they say.
Petition
They have also started a petition, which can be signed in Cotton’s bakers, calling on the council to protect this and other buildings in Whitworth Crescent, and to also protect the more beautiful shops in the Triangle, particularly the chemist shop.
Concerned residents are invited to attend on March 8.
