Real Nappy Week 2007 is set for March 11-18, and 'clothies' nationwide will be waving their (clean) nappies. Bitterne Park will not be left out: Southampton Real Nappy Network, based in Bond Road, will be all around town talking about the best-dressed babies' bottoms, and showing how cloth nappies have moved from being a niche to a mainstream choice.

Cloth nappies in many trendy and easy-to-use designs are now widely available from an ever-growing number of local and online suppliers, and some high street stores. New parents, however, still need accurate information and support, to make an informed decision about which nappies to use. Research for Women's Environmental Network (WEN) last year found parents who hadn’t tried them thought cloth nappies were difficult and messy. But parents who have the chance to try them out find them easier than expected: four out of five who tried them said they’d continue to use them after the trial period, helping to reduce the eight million disposable nappies that are thrown away every day in the UK, clogging up landfill sites.
Southampton Real Nappy Network is a voluntary group of mums who aim to show parents how they can save money, save waste and benefit the environment all at the same time. They run their own website, do exhibitions and demos and can be found in The Crown pub once a month having 'a meeting.' If you'd like to find out more about nappies or would like to meet some local 'clothies,' visit www.southamptonnappies.com. Alternatively, bring your little ones / bumps along to the 'Nappuccino' at St Denys Community Centre, Priory Road, on Saturday March 17, 2-4pm.
