Top tips to keep older people warm and well this winter

person in hat scarf and gloves Credit Age UKAge UK Southampton and the Met Office have joined forces for the fifth year running to warn older people and their carers about imminent cold snaps, so they can take simple precautions to stay warm and well. Here are their top tips for keeping cosy during the coldest months.

Age UK says over the last ten years a staggering quarter of a million older people have died from the cold, and research shows that exposure to cold can have a devastating impact on the health of older people, who are particularly vulnerable to the impact of low temperatures.

As people get older it takes longer to warm up which can be bad for people’s health. The cold thickens blood and increases blood pressure, and breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.

Age UK’s top tips for staying warm this winter

    • 64°F (18°C) is the ideal temperature for your bedroom and 70°F (21°C) is the ideal temperature for your living room. Check your thermostat or use a room thermometer to monitor temperature

    • Keep your bedroom window shut at night. Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.

    • Stay active and when you are indoors and try not to sit still for more than an hour; if you, can get up, walk around or make a hot drink.

    • Eat well. This is important, especially in the winter. Have at least one hot meal a day and have regular hot drinks, as they help to keep you warm. Also stock up on basic food items in case of a cold snap.

The partnership with the Met Office is part of Age UK’s drive to keep older people warm. The Met Office provides the Cold Weather Alert service for the Department of Health and this gives early warning of low temperatures, snow and/or widespread ice to frontline staff across the health and social care sector. Carers and vulnerable people can keep up-to-date with their local weather forecast and National Severe Weather Warnings by visiting www.metoffice.gov.uk, or through their local news providers.
