New lease of life promised for Triangle's pharmacy building

pharmacyThe pharmacy is being transformed into art studios and workshop space. Ben Scott fills us in on developments.

We had searched long and hard for a building which was in the right location to start our new business, Spice Art Studios, and whilst we had identified Bitterne Triangle and the surrounding area as exactly the kind of location we were looking for, we knew that a vast majority of the buildings simply did not have the amount of space, which we required.

In fact suitable premises were very hard to find until we became aware of the pharmacy’s availability, and could immediately see how what we had planned could become a reality from within the premises.

On our first viewing it was obvious that to bring the space back to its former glory was going to take a lot of work, and also that a planning application to change some of the building’s usage would be required.

Original features
With all the legal work completed we finally got the keys to the property on March 5. From then on we have been refurbishing the premises to a high standard, restoring and retaining original features where possible and making the building more accessible by lowering the front entrance step. Many of you have been asking about our intentions regarding the beautiful shop windows and have been concerned that we are going to remove them. Please be reassured that the windows will be well looked after! In fact, they are one of the reasons we fell in love with the building!

We are going to open Southampton’s first independent art gallery, artists’ studios and public workshop offering art and craft classes. The gallery will showcase a full range of beautifully finished contemporary artworks by renowned artists and makers from the south of England, many of whom are local to this area.

Studio space
A range of artist’s studios is available to rent on a monthly basis giving local artists the opportunity to develop their practice in a professional and supportive environment. Studios are suitable for a wide variety of practices.

Once our business opens we will be offering a variety of relaxed and inspirational art and craft courses suitable for all ages and abilities. Courses will run for six weeks at a time and will be taught by experienced professional artists who will encourage you to unleash your creativity or develop your existing skills.

Corporate clients can also enjoy the venue with tailor-made team building events on offer and the stylish gallery will provide an exciting venue for meetings, networking events and private parties.

We aim to finish the building works on May 14 and will open for business as soon as the building control officers have approved the changes we have made. Hopefully this will be around May 18. We look forward to welcoming you!
