Around 50 people spanning the generations gathered in Riverside Park near Cobden Bridge on Sunday evening (August 7) to light candles and remember the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were addressed by the Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Cathie McEwing, and Vice President of CND Rebecca Johnson. Pic: Saul & Sam

In a symbolic gesture, Ms Johnson, left, who is also the Green Party spokesperson on Security, Peace and Defence, brought a little water from a stream that runs near to Ground Zero in Nagasaki to sprinkle in Southampton.

She said: “Those who survived the first blast, with their skin shredded… they were so thirsty. Every testimony from Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of people calling out for water – begging for water. And so I’m wanting to sprinkle a little water on the ground here in Southampton in the hope that this never happens: not to Southampton, Portsmouth, London, Faslane, Aldermaston… not to anywhere else in the world.”
