Cobbett Road Library news
Annual issue figures for 2006/07 show that Cobbett Road Library had the largest increase overall in the city - a massive 14%. Read more Library news here.
New Saturday morning reading groups have been well attended at Cobbett Road Library, but have room for more members, so if you're interested, please ask for more information. There are also plans for a Friday afternoon crime reading group to start on June 1 from 2 - 3pm; again, please ask at the library for more information.
Drop in councillor surgeries have also started at the library on the third Saturday of the month.
You can also look for the 2007 collection of picture books to read with your children and vote for in the Favourite Book to Share Award. Visit the children's library to take part.

Friends of Cobbett Road Library
Friends of Cobbett Road Library meet in the community room on the last Saturday of the month at 11 am: do come along and give your views on how the library can best be used, and find out more about what's going on. The next meeting is on Saturday 26 May. Notes from the last meeting follow.
Notes on the ideas discussed at the meeting on Saturday 28 April 2007.
1. Although the Library was nominated some time ago to be included on a list of notable local buildings, it has never been officially included. It was decided that we should write to the local Conservation Officer to see if the Library can be adopted to go on that list.
2. It was suggested that a list should be made of people who had supported the Library during the threat of closure. There would then be a nucleus of supporters ready to ‘take arms’ quickly in case of any future threat. We were assured that this list does already exist.
3. Some people seemed unaware of the existence and location of the library, during the recent campaign. It was thought a good idea to produce posters to be displayed in local shops, encouraging people to borrow books etc and advertising opening times.
4. It was agreed to involve David Baldwin, chief librarian, and invite him to the next meeting.
5. Bitterne Local History Society would be contacted to see if there were any known historical associations with the library, which might strengthen our case to have the library listed.
6. The Curate from Bitterne Park will be invited to the next meeting, as he had been very supportive during the threat of closure, and seemed to have lots of contacts.
7. The possibility of joining The Library Campaign, as an organisation, would be investigated. This unites people in a similar situation to us, and gives advice and ideas on what to do to help stave off the threat of closure.
