Southampton Scrapstore, a 25-year-old arts and crafts resource centre in Belgrave Road which saves all sorts of discarded materials from landfill so they can be used by schools, community groups and individuals, has been appealing for more members and volunteers to help it survive.

Based at Belgrave Industrial Estate in Swathling, The Scrapstore said in a bulletin:

“Southampton Scrapstore has been operating in Southampton for over 25 years, providing community groups, schools and many others with a useful resource, whilst stopping tonnes of useful materials going to waste.

“Since our move to the new site in Portswood over five years ago, membership has fallen and our paid staff and volunteers have been struggling to keep the store financially viable. We have survived by using reserves, which are now almost all gone, and so we are now asking for your help in helping us to continue for another 25 years.”

The Scrapstore says its main priority is to recruit new members to generate the income it needs to survive, and is appealing for people to spread the word “about all the wonderful things we have in the Scrapstore and help us reach more people”, although it says it has had a flurry of new members since it launched its campaign.
