The deadline for having your say on Southampton City Council’s budget proposals, to enable it to save £42.3 million in the face of what it says are continuing cuts to its funding from government, is January 24, 2017. Switching from weekly to fortnightly household waste collections is among the proposals.

The council explains on this page that: “If agreed this will mean that we will alternate between collecting your household waste (green lidded bin) one week and your recycling (blue lidded bin)/grey glass box/communal bin the following week. Essentially this will mean that you will no longer put your household waste bin out on the same week as your recycling is collected.”
As reported previously, Southampton City Council says it’s already made £92.4 million in savings over the last five years, but by 2020/21 it has to find another £42.3 million because its government grant funding will be reduced by 55%, and phased out by 2019/20.
