From toddler and language groups, to computer lessons, drama, Tai Chi and gardening, all sorts of things go on at Cobbett Hub and Library. You can find out more, and even propose your own activites, at an event on Saturday, May 13 – writes Madeleine O’Beirne.

What can I do at the Library?
Did you know that at Cobbett Hub & Library, Cobbett Road, SO18 1HL, as well as borrowing books, browsing newspapers, magazines and reference materials, accessing the internet and even visiting the Library’s very own permanent art exhibition, all for FREE, you can also enjoy the many events and activities on offer?
You can pop in for a coffee and a chat whenever the library is open and, if you have an hour or two to spare each week, you can learn a language, share computer skills, practise Tai Chi, express yourself through art and much, much more!
I joined one of three book groups held at Cobbett Hub & Library when I arrived in Southampton a year or so ago. Now that I am beginning to learn about all of the other diverse clubs and classes running regularly, I thought I would share some information on these with you. Many activities are FREE, and all aim to be affordable.
What’s on and when?
- On Mondays there are coffee mornings, Home Education Group sessions, Art Group meetings, Tai Chi sessions and French and German language classes
- On Tuesdays there are drama classes for 4 to 16 year-olds, with Acting Up
- On Wednesdays there are Home Education Group sessions, Art Group meetings and After School Club sessions
- On Fridays there are Toddler Group sessions, IT Club meetings and occasional evening talks
- On Saturdays, there are monthly Book Group meetings and Friends of Cobbett Road Library meetings

The Library holds bigger events, too. Events organised this year have included drama and music performances, a quiz and a fish and chip supper. During school holidays, story times and activities are run to tie in with those held by libraries nationally.

Further details and a timetable of all events and activities are available via Cobbett Hub & Library’s own What’s On page.
How can I find out more?
Come to a special event!
On Saturday, May 13, the Friends of Cobbett Road Library will be holding a FREE Community Event, from 10:30am until 12:30pm, to showcase the many sessions that run at the Library each week. You will be able to chat to group members and organisers and sample some of the activities for yourself. Further information is available on the Friends of Cobbett Road Library Facebook page.

Want to join the Library?
There will be books on display to reflect the range of activities available and you will, of course, be able to browse the shelves and borrow books on your own interests and hobbies. It’s FREE to join the Library, and volunteer staff will be on hand to help you. The Friends of Cobbett Road Library will also be providing a plant stall and, as usual, plenty of tasty refreshments.
Could you run an event or activity at the Library?
Do you have a great idea for an activity or event, but nowhere yet to set it up? There will be a stall providing information and guidelines on hiring space, and ideas both big and small will be welcomed.

Mad Hatters popped up everywhere at a tea and fancy dress party held in 2015 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Caroll's enormously influential fantasy Alice in Wonderland
Not found what you’re looking for?
If there are any additional activities or services that you would like the Library to provide, there will be an opportunity for you to share your ideas – perhaps Cobbett Hub & Library will be able to match your request with a service that offers exactly what you’re looking for.
If you can’t make the event on May 13, but would like to find out more about events, activities and services available at Cobbett Hub & Library, remember that you can drop in on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.
