Speaking on the BBC's Sunday Politics South on May 7 (58:30 into the programme), Rose said: “I am standing against Royston Smith – I’ll say it on live TV.”

Host Peter Henley asked: “Why stand against an MP who said he would resign if there wasn’t a referendum all along.”

“I don’t believe Royston Smith has done enough for the city… and quite frankly I feel that UKIP should stand in as many seats as possible. I don’t agree with alliances…” he responded.

In 2015 UKIP came third in Southampton Itchen. The voting was as follows:

Conservative

18656

Labour

16340

UKIP

6010

Green

1876

Liberal Democrat

567

TUSC

233

There were 44710 valid votes cast from an electorate of 72281.

A UKIP source suggested the party wouldn't be fielding a candidate in Southampton Test, which includes St Denys, Portswood and Highfield.
