Markus Bergstrom - Pavilion

“With new artworks commissioned by John Hansard Gallery, the season will animate the Square and welcome audiences to the cultural hub of the city”, says the city council.

Under the banner of Summer in the Square, new art installations and events will include:

  • A specially commissioned circular pavilion designed by Markus Bergström, pictured, that will host music, art, performance and community events throughout July and August. When not being used for performances the pavilion will be “a great place to meet friends and family or just somewhere to sit and enjoy the sunshine”.

  • Vibrant and interactive installations including Huddlehood, a series of wearable yellow artworks by Rhona Byrne, and a colourful banner installation by David Batchelor utilising local sail-making skills.

  • Two dramatic talking-point billboards on the façades of both buildings of Studio 144, in partnership with the 15th Istanbul Biennial.

Woodrow Kernohan, Director of the John Hansard Gallery, said:

“Over the summer we are taking part in Summer in the Square that will be a flavour of what is to come when the Gallery opens in the Cultural Quarter later this year. The projects by David Batchelor, Markus Bergström, Rhona Byrne and with the Istanbul Biennial, will directly engage with our diverse new audiences and the public realm around Studio 144, inviting interaction, dialogue and playfulness.”
