The deadline was originally the end of October.
As reported, work to upgrade the wastewater treatment works off Kent Road, by Saltmead in St Denys, is currently underway, and Southern Water is running a community grant scheme open to those in the Portswood ward.
Southern Water Project Manager James Rance said: "We've extended the previous deadline of October 31 to encourage more groups to apply.
"We're always keen to support local causes where we can while we're working in a particular area.
"But don't hang around - if you meet our criteria, please get your applications in soon."
To apply for a grant of up to £2,000, community groups and initiatives should be involved in promoting one or more of three key areas: healthy lifestyles, the environment, or education and opportunities.
Southern Water says an independent judging panel will decide which groups get funded. The panel will include members of the project team, Southern Water's delivery partner Galliford Try which is carrying out the upgrade works, and local community representatives.
