Council services over the holiday period

civic centre gp 460 stylised

From libraries and museums to bins and Christmas tree collections, the council has announced opening times and changes to its services over the festive period.

The following is from the council, in their own words.

While many council services will be operating as normal throughout the Christmas period, there are some non-essential services that will be unavailable during this period. Here's a handy round up of information and those services affected.

Gateway
The last day that the Gateway one stop shop in Guildhall Square will be open is Friday 22 December, 9.30am - 4.30pm. Gateway will then be closed on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 December and back open on Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 December. Gateway will also be closed on Monday 1 January 2018 and reopens as usual on Tuesday 2 January. Many of the tasks you can do at Gateway will still be available to complete here on our website 24/7 throughout the Christmas period.

Libraries: Christmas opening hours
All council run libraries will be closed from 4pm on Saturday 23 December to Monday 1 January (inclusive). They will re-open on Tuesday 2 January 2018. Additionally YMCA Weston Community, Thornhill Community and Burgess Road libraries will also close during this time. Any items on loan during this period will be due back after the closure. Cobbett Hub and Millbrook Community libraries will remain open as usual with the exception of bank holidays.

Bin collections: general waste, recycling and glass
There will be changes to your bin collections over the holiday period so please check your online bin collections calendar. Please note there will be no bin collections on 25 and 26 December 2017 or 1 January 2018. You can check your revised bin collections over the Christmas and New Year period here.

Garden waste collections
The last garden waste collection for 2017 will be on Friday 22 December. Collections will start again on Monday 8 January 2018.

Christmas tree collections
We will be collecting real Christmas trees from the kerbside from 8 January 2018 for two weeks. Please make sure your tree is put by the edge of your property, and not blocking the highway, on your revised general waste collection day. We will be unable to return to collect any trees not put out in time. Alternatively, residents that are signed up to the garden waste collection service, can put their Christmas tree in their garden waste bin for collection on their designated collection day (only one tree per household please). Trees can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (please shake off any soil).

Household Waste & Recycling Centre (HWRC)
The Household Waste Recycling Centre is closed on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 December and Monday 1 January - otherwise it is open as usual from 9am - 4pm.

Museums and Art Gallery: Christmas Opening Hours
SeaCity Museum is closed 24-26 December 2017 inclusive and on 1 January 2018.
Tudor House & Garden is closed 24 December 2017 to 1 January 2018 (inclusive). Reopens on 2 January 2018 from 10am - 3pm.
Southampton City Art Gallery is closed 24 December 2017 to 1 January 2018 (inclusive). Reopens on 2 January 2018 from 10am - 3pm.

Car parking
Please note that Sunday parking charges will apply to all parking in the city on Boxing Day (Tuesday 26 December 2017) and New Year’s Day (Monday 1 January 2018). We recommend that people check the charging periods on ticket machines as charges will vary depending on location.

Over the Christmas and New Year period our last day open is Wednesday 20 December. We will then be closed on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 December. Gritting and snow clearance
With the onset of the expected cold weather our aim is to make Southampton’s roads as safe as possible and keep disruption caused by bad weather in winter to a minimum by gritting roads and providing grit bins.

From November through to the end of March we provide the winter maintenance service for the city which includes pre-salting to help prevent ice forming and post-salting to melt ice and snow that has already formed.

Priority one routes are treated as routine pre-salting, in advance of any forecast of frost, ice or snow. We monitor daily weather forecasts and road conditions to enable us to decide when precautionary salting or other treatment is required and can react quickly to extreme weather conditions. Find out more about road gritting here.
