The local authority says its draft transport plan sets out what Southampton’s approach to transport will be, and “projects needed to make Southampton a more successful, healthy and sustainable city”.

Ideas include developing what’s described as a “mass transit system” which “could even be automated”, allowing people to “travel easily around and across Southampton on high quality vehicles” with a frequent “metro” level of service.

Other ideas include a network of park and ride sites; a “comprehensive cycle network” making Southampton “a true cycling city”; support for the growth and smooth operation of the main employment areas in Southampton; and working towards a “zero emission city” by supporting “alternative fuels and intelligent management of traffic so that Southampton is a clean and healthy city”.

You can find out more by downloading the draft transport plan and related documents from the bottom of this city council web page, which also links to the consultation. - open until October 16
