The campaign aims to get children along to libraries and in the habit of reading. The books were donated to the library on behalf of publishing partners of The Reading Agency, a charity working to inspire and support libraries in creating the best possible access to reading for everyone.
John Denham said: “I fully support this campaign, and Cobbett Road library, and am delighted to be donating books to support their excellent work. Our libraries and librarians help children get the reading habit early, are a great place to spend time and learn to enjoy books.”
The number of children’s books borrowed from public libraries in 2004/05 was 88.6 million, an increase of 2% on the previous year. There are over 4200 public libraries in the UK, offering a wide selection of new and favourite children’s books, from board books for babies to graphic novels and Japanese Manga aimed at teenagers and young adults. Membership is free and it costs nothing to borrow the books!
