The busy junction of the A3024 is used by many school children, and campaigners say because of poor crossings pedestrians take risks by running across, and “there’s no safe cycle route”.
They say “a regular combined pedestrian/cyclist phase over the dangerous junction next to Bitterne Station” is needed – and describe it as “monstrous” that Highways England proposals for the area apparently “don’t take this into account”.
Events coordinator of Southampton Cycling Campaign Lyn Brayshaw told bitternepark.info: “Have you ever been there and watched the school children running across that road in the morning – putting their head down and just running? It makes you… it’s horrendous.”
A protest to draw attention to the junction has been organised for pedestrians and cyclists by Southampton Cycling Campaign and The Art House on Sunday, November 18, coinciding with World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims, gathering at 2.50pm for 3pm at Bitterne Station.
There’s also a petition calling for changes, which is here.
