Sonia Cottrell was the lucky winner, who had recently moved house and took the opportunity to switch gas and electricity provider.
“It was really important to choose a company that did not have shareholders to please and also that provided green energy,” said Sonia.
“I chose CitizEn because apart from being considerably cheaper than our previous provider, I wanted to support Southampton City Council's initiative. It's very easy to criticise the Council - I do it as much as anyone - but I think it's also important to recognise when they get things right.
“Winning a year's free energy was a massive surprise and I was delighted to get the call; I'll be using the savings to get loft insulation as our new house isn't very warm!”
Southampton City Council said to be in with a chance of winning, people had to sign up to CitizEn Energy between September 26 to November 7, 2018 and quote a competition code. The winner was chosen at random.
The council said CitizEn Energy puts “people before profits”, and that “any money [it does] make goes straight back into projects to help improve the lives of the people within the community".
