Warm Front Grants help with energy costs
If you live in a cold home you may be eligible for a Warm Front Grant to help you manage your winter bills more easily.
Nearly 11,800 Southampton homes can be eligible for a Warm Front Grant. Southampton City Council is currently working with Warm Front to send out letters, telling residents that they could be entitled to up to Ł2,700 — this could give them free central heating or insulation.
Last year, only 441 residents took advantage of the grants, but Southampton City Council want to make sure more residents know what it is about this year — giving them more information about how they could get involved.
People over 60 and those with children under 16 are among those eligible for the scheme, along with those suffering from long-term illnesses and pregnant women who have a maternity certificate MAT B1 if they receive other benefits.
Grants can be used to repair a broken heating system, pay for a highly efficient condensing boiler and install gas, electric and oil heating.
Installations such as loft insulation, draught proofing and cavity wall insulation are also available along with low energy light bulbs, tank lagging and a free home energy check.
Councillor Phil Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing and Neighbourhoods said: “I find it deeply shocking that less than four per cent of the 11,800 eligible city homes took up the Warm Front Grant last year. I hope that by better promoting the grant, we can help many more people have a warmer winter.”
Noeleen McNally, Warm Front Coordinator for Southampton said: “The earlier you apply, the sooner we can get you ready for winter. Typically a package of Warm Front improvements can save you as much as Ł193 on annual fuel bills, so it’s well worth picking up the phone now to see whether you are entitled to make a claim.”
To qualify for a grant, residents must own their own home, or rent it from a private landlord.
For more information, call the Warm Front helpline free on 0800 316 6007 (quoting reference MK858). Lines are open Monday to Friday 8am-6pm and 9am - 5pm on Saturdays.
