The Bay, a bend on the river Itchen just past Northam Bridge, should be an excellent habitat for nature but it is often strewn with rubbish. Much of this is plastic which is not only unsightly but harmful to wildlife.

Clean-ups in the Nature Reserve take place twice a year, in spring and autumn, and always result in a huge haul of rubbish. Last autumn hard working volunteers cleared a tonne of trash from the site: this included over 700 containers of which over 500 were plastic bottles (many thanks for citizen science data collection by Surfers Against Sewage https://www.sas.org.uk, as part of their Bottle Pollution Report).

Recently, there has been an upsurge in interest in nature conservation and the problems of plastic pollution – and more people have come to help at Chessel clean-ups. If you would like to join them, thank you - the team will be at the end of Quayside road on Saturday 30th March between 10 am and 2pm – just past Bitterne Manor Primary School SO18 1DP.

Please wear suitable clothing and robust foot-ware. Under 16s need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. N.B. Parking is very restricted and there are no toilets on site.
