Barney made his arrival at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, which is attended by many 16 to 19-year olds from our area, during Mental Health Awareness Week (May 13-19).
He’s proving popular with many students, who can drop in to see him throughout the day during study periods, between lessons and before exams.
Amy Shepherd (above left, with Amy Bowers, right), who met Barney before one of her exams, said: “Barney is very cute and has made me feel more relaxed before my exam, especially as I have a dog at home.”
Speaking about the benefits of therapy dogs, Barton Peveril counsellor Helen Cunliffe said: “The students have responded to Barney very positively. Many students have dogs at home and use them for support, so to have Barney in college during a stressful exam period has been a very familiar way to get some additional support.”
As reported, another therapy dog – Indie, a Fox Red Labrador – joined the team at Bitterne Park School in October 2018 to support students with concerns.
She already has around 400 followers on Instagram!
