Southampton City Mission, which runs food banks in Southampton, has issued another urgent appeal for food donations.

As reported a month ago there was an appeal for various food items for City Mission's food banks, which it calls Basics Banks.
The charity said on its Facebook page on Monday (May 20): “Unfortunately some areas of the warehouse (pictured above) is empty referrals to our service are many but donations are just not meeting the need, can you help?”
It highlighted particular need for items such as tinned meat, carrots, rice pudding and custard, tinned spaghetti and macaroni cheese.
The Trussell Trust, which runs a network of food banks nationally (although not in Southampton), gave out a record 1.6m emergency food parcels between April 2018 and March 2019, with more than 500,000 going to children.
“The main reasons for people needing emergency food are benefits consistently not covering the cost of living (33%), and delays or changes to benefits being paid,” said the Trust, adding that “ending the five week for a first Universal Credit payment should be the Government’s first priority to help create a future without food banks”.
Donations can be dropped off in Southampton at any Basic Bank when it’s open, or at City Mission’s Millbrook warehouse by arrangement. There’s more information on their website.
You can also drop off donations at the Old Chemist at Bitterne Park Triangle on Wednesdays from 10am - 3pm, and there's also a donation point in the corridor at the front entrance to St Denys Church & Centre.
Clothing can also be taken to the city’s Clothes Bank at the Church of Ascension, which is also on Wednesdays at the same times.
