The Hasler consists of 2, 4, 8 and 12 mile races, and competitors were to use Bitterne Park Social Club as their base.

Melanie Wing from Southampton Canoe Club said that conditions past Cobden and Northam bridges were expected to be unsafe.

“There are some exceptional young paddlers who race at these levels and the risk was deemed too high,” she said.

She added that club was “very disappointed” to have had to make the decision to cancel.
