The Old Chemist is hosting an afternoon tea event on Sunday, July 7 to raise funds for the ‘Bags of Mercy’ project, which provides essentials for women fleeing domestic abuse or sex trafficking.
Astrid Dyson from the project said that often women arrive at safe houses or refuges with nothing. And because house locations are confidential, members of the public can’t just pop in and drop off donations or lend a hand.
At the same time she said houses don’t get government funding and are run on donations and fluctuating grants.
“When clients arrive they often really need some essentials such as toiletries so they can have a shower, get cleaned up and start to feel settled.”
“What I love about Bags of Mercy is that it is a way for the community to get involved and help these clients without breaching the confidentiality,” she said.

Bags of Mercy relies on the public for donations of both cash and the items for their bags, which are collected at The Old Chemist at the Triangle.
Volunteers can also help put bags together.
