‘Airport eXpansion Opposition’ (AXO), urges visitors to its new website to sign a petition, write to their three Southampton ward councillors asking them to object to expansion, and to complain when aircraft noise is a problem so concerns are logged.
The AXO website home page explains how to do all three.
The petition calls for the council to “rethink its position on expansion of Southampton International Airport in the light of Parliament's declaration of a climate emergency and the 2019 amendment to the Climate Change Act target for zero net carbon by 2050, and publicly state that the Council objects to the expansion of the Airport”.
Petitions receiving more than 1500 signatures are in most cases debated by full council, with the organiser having the chance to speak.
At the time of writing 128 people had signed the petition.
AXO explains on its website that its campaign is run by Friends of the Earth Southampton and partnered by other groups including Extinction Rebellion Southampton.
As reported, the airport said in August it will be organising public information open evenings “which will give all members of our local community the opportunity to speak with us and ask any questions or concerns you may have in relation to our future expansion plans” [pdf].
