Organisers believe the kitchen and large room space at the back of the new October Books shop is a perfect venue for ‘Veg Out’ – a new weekly pop-up café.
“As well as spreading a vegan and environmental message, the Café will provide a space to promote strong community links, combat loneliness and social isolation, reduce food waste and encourage healthy eating at low cost,” said team member Giulia Gigliotti.
Most of the fruit and vegetables will be reclaimed food that local traders would otherwise discard.
“Food waste is a huge environmental issue and by intercepting food in this way we hope to reduce some of this waste locally and be able to offer nutritious low-cost vegan meals,” she said.
The cafe will be not-for-profit and run by volunteers. It will charge visitors on a pay-what-you-want basis and also encourage them to 'suspend a coffee' - those who can afford it to are encouraged to pay for someone else's coffee or meal.
The plan is for Veg Out to run every Monday from 10am to 4pm, and it’s due to launch on Monday, October 14.
At the time of writing the crowdfunder has raised £645 of a £1000 target. While the aim is for the café to be self-sustaining, initial costs need to be met to get it off the ground, explains the crowdfunding page, which is here.
