Change of use application at business park off Kent Road

kent road signTextile recycling company Byronswell Ltd has lodged a planning application for change of use to allow storage and distribution at its Itchen Business Park site premises, off Kent Road in St Denys – a move opposed by ward councillor John Savage, who says Kent Road isn’t suitable for large industrial vehicles.

The application is for: “Change of use to storage and distribution (Use Class B8). Siting of a shipping container and re-siting of commercial waste bins (Retrospective)”.

Commenting on the application Cllr Savage (Lab, Portswood) says that the “distribution of goods on a regular basis and certainly at current scale and frequency should be refused”.

He says “extra long HGVs... harm the amenity of the residents of Kent Rd. Nothing bigger than a refuse vehicle should pass down this route”.

As reported, earlier in the year the Southampton City Council claimed a victory when an enforcement notice apparently designed to reduce a neighbouring business’s use of Kent Road by heavy vehicles was upheld by the Planning Inspectorate following an appeal.
