John Spottiswoode, left, had been announced on the party’s website [cached page] as its candidate to run in the ultra marginal, but there’s now doubt over whether that will be the case.
His listing has now been removed from the Green's current list of Southampton candidates with a message that simply reads: “We will be standing for election in Southampton Itchen. Southampton Itchen Candidate to be reannounced shortly.”
Spottiswoode told bitternepark.info: “I am considering whether to stand aside for family reasons and The Green Party is currently seeing if there is an alternative suitable candidate if I do stand aside.”
The party itself commented that it would “put out a press release as soon as we have all the details”.
Time is tight as candidates wishing to stand in the general election must submit nomination papers by 4pm on November 14.
The election timetable is available in full to download from the Electoral Commission website.
At the last election in 2017 the Green Party polled 725 votes in Southampton Itchen. Conservative Royston Smith beat Labour’s Simon Letts by 31 votes to win the seat.
