Southampton City Council is set to debate its position on airport expansion on Wednesday (Nov 20) after a petition gained over 1500 signatures.

The petition calls on Southampton City Council to “rethink its position on expansion of Southampton International Airport in the light of Parliament's declaration of a climate emergency and the 2019 amendment to the Climate Change Act target for zero net carbon by 2050, and publicly state that the Council objects to the expansion of the Airport”.
According to the petition, expansion will lead to more noise and air pollution, worse road congestion, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and offer few benefits for Southampton residents by enabling more flights.
Two petitions, here & here, on the issue have so far gained around 1900 signatures in total, assuming no duplicates.
Details of the agenda item are available from the council’s website as a pdf here [scroll to item 4 starting on page 6].
The meeting takes place in the council chamber at the Civic Centre from 2pm, and is open to members of the public.
There’s also expected to be “an entertainment” by opposers of expansion from 1pm in Guildhall Square.
The airport has said it will submit a planning application to Eastleigh Borough Council (EBC) to extend the runway “to go live for public consultation in November” - although at the time of writing it hasn't yet been published on the planning section of EBC’s website.
