Community organisation SO18 Big Local is asking for pre-loved outfits suitable for wearing to a school prom for its new ‘Encore’ project, which aims to reduce the need for one-off garments.

Encore! does its bit for the environment by encouraging the re-use of dresses, accessories and other suitable items, hiring out them out to local young people for their school proms.
As well playing a part in reducing the need for single-use fashion, it means outfits can be provided at a much lower cost – in fact low enough to cover the dry cleaning costs, plus a returnable damage deposit.
“We also came up with the idea of ‘prom fayres’ whereby local businesses involved in such events as proms (e.g. hairdressers, nail technicians etc) could buy ‘pitches’ at our fayres, where we will have our prom outfits out on racks for people to try on and arrange hire,” said SO18 Big Local worker Jo Proctor.
“We’re hoping this will create a fun atmosphere and mean that the young people can arrange several things at once if they want to.”
Encore! is after quality items in good condition that can be hired out. If you have something you’d like to donate, take it to SO18 Big Local’s office at the community centre in Townhill Park (SO18 2FH) – please make contact in advance to save a wasted journey as the worker is part-time: call/text on 07528 338104 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
