Veg-Out Community Vegan Café is in the community space at October Books every Monday from 11am-4pm.

The team collect food from traders that would otherwise be thrown away and then concoct “sweet and savoury lunchtime treats, both hot and cold, for your eating pleasure”. Food is on a pay-as-you-feel basis, and there is often live music.

The cafe runs from Monday (Jan 6).

Meanwhile, just around the corner, the opening times of Café Down the Lane, a venture run by Southampton Mencap, are changing for 2020, with the former Wednesday opening times switching to Tuesdays when the café opens 12pm-3.30pm.

It’s also open on Mondays, from 1.30pm-3.30pm.

The venture supports people with learning disabilities to gain valuable skills in catering and customer service, building their confidence and independence to help them along the way to mainstream employment opportunities.

On the menu is “a delicious range of home-made food at reasonable prices and freshly prepared on the premises”, and it also welcomes music students from the University of Southampton to perform (usually on the first Tuesday of each month).

Find the Café Down the Lane at Southampton Mencap, 187a Portswood Road, SO17 2NF (lane between Post Office & October Books).
