Work is due to start on February 17 for around five days on installing a pedestrian refuge and high friction surfacing on Woodmill Lane between Dell Road and Cornwall Road.

Woodmill Lane, which is used by many school children, can be a difficult road to cross, with poor visibility on the bend near Dell Road.
Community group SO18 Big Local described the move on their website as: “Great news for residents who, in particular, have kids who need to cross Woodmill Lane to get to BPS [Bitterne Park School] – a pedestrian refuge island and safety markings are being installed next week.”
The first two phases of the work will involve temporary lights.
In a letter to residents the council’s contractor Balfour Beatty says:
“The works are programmed to start on Monday 17th February 2020 and will last for approximately 5 days. The works are weather dependant and so the date above is subject to change, however, we will endeavour to meet the proposed schedule. In addition to this letter, advanced warning signs erected on site will advise of any start dates closer to the time.
“The installation of the pedestrian refuge and footway adjustments will be carried out in three phases. The first two phases will involve two-way temporary traffic lights on Woodmill Lane. During the second phase of traffic management the western footway outside house no. 79 will be partially closed and a short diversion will be in place to safely direct pedestrians around the works. At all other times pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained as far as reasonably practicable. The working hours will be 07:30hrs – 17:30hrs.
“We will return to complete the final phase, which will involve an overnight closure of Woodmill Lane between Downton Road and Cornwall Road with a signed vehicular diversion. The working hours will be 20:00hrs - 06:00hrs, this phase involves a short 15m patch of resurfacing, followed by the installation of the ‘high friction’ surface treatment and finally the refreshing of the road markings. The noisiest works will be started as early as practicable and it is hoped that they will be completed by midnight. Please look out for the advanced warning signs that will display the date of these works once programmed.”
