The school said it will remain open and functioning until “at least the end of the current half term” and hopes to find a solution to “continue until the end of the current academic year, and beyond”.
It’s understood Begbies Traynor will be appointed administrators on Monday.
The school said it was taking the action with “deep regret” but that it was the “appropriate and responsible action to take at this time”.
“Administration is a rescue process, which will provide protection for the school and afford it the breathing space it needs whilst options on the best way forward are fully explored,” said a school spokesperson.
“Governors remain hopeful that through Administration, a solution can be found to enable St Mary’s to continue to provide an excellent education for its pupils.”

Meanwhile a “Help SAVE St Mary’s Independent School” GoFundMe page has now been set up by the school’s “parent body”, who describe their shock at hearing the news.
“As you can image (sic) this has caused shock, immense sadness and high-emotion, not only for our loved children but the loyal and unique staff, the faithful parents, and ever-supportive Alumni/Old Simmarians, as well as everyone who has had the pleasure of being part of our close community,.” says the fundraising page.
Organisers add that the school has been running for 99 years, and there were hopes of celebrating its 100th next year.
“We want our children to continue their educational journey at St Mary’s and ask that you help support us if you can,” continues the fundraising page.
At the time of writing £3,000 had been pledged of a £50,000 goal.
