Police officer stabbed while on welfare call

The officer was checking the welfare of a man just after midday on Thursday (Oct 15).

He was then stabbed several times.

Police say his injuries are serious but not life threatening.

His family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A 51-year-old man from Southampton was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and remains in custody. 

Investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident are continuing.

A police spokesperson said the force does not believe there is any wider risk to the public.
