Continuing the first trial phase on the Isle of Wight, which has been hailed as a success, Solent Transport’s project will also extend to Winchester and Portsmouth.

The aim is to “provide safe transport alternatives for the region during the coronavirus pandemic, test e-scooters as a transport option beyond the trial period and improve air quality by using environmentally friendly travel options”.

E-scooter hirers must be over 16 and provide at least a valid UK provisional driving licence.

Currently, only hired e-scooters that are being used in the trial can be ridden on roads and cycle lanes.

They are governed under the same rules as bicycles and wearing your own bicycle helmet is recommended.

The use of private e-scooters remains limited to private land, and riding private e-scooters on the highway network is illegal.
