On Facebook, PCSO 17932 writes: "We are seeing an increase in reported Theft from Vehicles in and around the Bitterne Park area. These Thefts can range from offenders trying car door handles or forcing entry into parked vehicles. We have also had a couple of incidents reported where number plates have been stolen , these are then used by the offenders on other vehicle to undertake crimes elsewhere."
No statistics are offered.
Various measures are suggested to "reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim", including:
• Making sure all doors are locked and windows and sunroof shut, "no matter how hot the weather"
• Park in a busy area and use your garage if you have one
• Don't leave anything in the vehicle, including the boot; even a coat may make a thief want to break in in case it hides something more valuable
• If possible take the music system with you
• Don't leave documents with your name on in the vehicle
• Don't leave sat navs in the car, including cradle; wipe suction marks from the windscreen
The Facebook post includes various comments complaining that "reports of crimes are not being followed up".
