Panel to decide on Persian Cultural Centre licence

By Maria Zaccaro, Local Democracy Reporter

h-palace nightA city council panel is set to decide whether to grant a licence to the Persian Cultural Centre, currently being converted for use at the Triangle.

As reported in September, a planning application for the project, which will be "a cultural centre for the Persian community in Southampton" in the former H Palace building, was conditionally approved last August.

Documents published ahead of the licensing meeting read: "It is intended that this will be a community hub for the local Persian community, and will have the benefits of an alcohol and late night refreshment licence. It is anticipated that the premises will be used mainly for the local community as a place to meet, discuss and relax. It is also envisaged that the premises will be used for wider events to which general member of the public will be invited."

Measures will also apparently be in place in case of larger events to avoid noise.

The documents read: "It is not envisaged that the persons attending the premises will be in large numbers. Where large number of persons are expected additional steps will be taken by the management to ensure that persons are quiet on leaving the property. If necessary door staff will be provided where larger number of persons are anticipated, and a CCTV system will be installed."

If the new licence is granted the venue would be allowed to open from 10am to 11pm.

The plans have sparked some objections from local residents mainly about possible noise, and include concerns from residential neighbours about potential rooftop use.

The meeting of the Licensing Sub-Committee will be held online at 4pm on April 28.
