Pensioners will march on Monday (March 10) from the Bargate at 12.30pm,
to the Civic Centre, for a meeting at 1pm, which will call for a
better deal after 100 years of state pension.
A statement from the Southampton Pensioners Forum on the Age Concern website says the
meeting will “call upon the government to set the Basic State Pension
above poverty level. In the year we celebrate the centenary of the
State Pension it is deplorable that the State Pension is below poverty
level. In 1908 ... the pension was set at 5 shillings a week, nearly a
quarter of average earnings. Today, after 100 years progress we have a
Basic State Pension that is just over 15% of average earnings."
