Community benefits of co-ops explained

october books signFree workshops during May & June explain how co-ops can help individuals and their communities. Sessions kick off in Portswood on Thursday (May 8).

Co-operatives provide locally owned, democratic solutions bringing people together to meet their common needs, says the local Co-operative Development Agency SACDA. For example: food co-ops provide affordable specialist foods (e.g. vegan, organic, fairtrade); housing co-ops provide affordable accommodation; worker co-ops provide democratic workplaces with a share in the profits; service co-operatives provide shared work space; social firms provide work opportunities for disabled people where they get a real say in how the business operates; and child-care co-operatives and community co-operatives also benefit groups with common needs.
