Lend a hand to clear Chessel Bay

Chessel Bay
Chessel Bay Local Nature Reserve will be getting this year’s autumn clean-up on Saturday October 11. If you can spare an hour or more, why not come and join in with the effort?

Volunteers and City Council stalwarts will be assembling at the end of Quayside road between 10am and 2pm to clear the foreshore and woodland of its collection of debris. The Bay, mostly intertidal mudflats, is often awash with litter brought in by the tide.  Much of it is plastic waste, particularly bottles, as well as polystyrene and other similar items - an unfortunately not uncommon problem on other shores and in much of the sea too.

The mudflats at Chessel Bay are home to many wading birds such as the curlew and oystercatcher as well as winter migratory birds like brent geese. It's important that we keep our special City Nature Reserve cared for and litter-picks are a crucial part of that; litter is not only unsightly but is hazardous to wildlife.

If you can come along and give an hour or so to help us clean up that would be great.  Many hands really do make light work. Turn up at the end of Quayside Road, Bitterne Manor any time between 10am and 1.30pm.  Wear stout clothing.  Children under 16 need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Please note there are no toilets on site.
